Considerations Google Classroom

Google Classroom

Key issues for new school users

Overview of use and expectations
How will each class use the Google Classroom?
How often will the work be set?
How many different tasks (reading and writing daily, or each subject weekly tasks, etc)?Who has responsibility for this?
Do you want pupils to be able to post to the rest of the class?
Do you want to set scores/grades or not?
How can teachers set age appropriate tasks? (encourage teachers to login as a pupil to evaluate this- age appropriate as in digital literacy appropriate!!)

Set up

Creating accounts for all pupils and teachers

Tech support at each school should be able to set up the School account and use USOs to create logins for all members of staff and pupils using user names and passwords synced with USOs
Consider making all classes visible to SLT and phase leaders.

Creating classrooms and inviting students

Tech support can create classrooms for each year.
Each teacher invites other relevant teachers so the same assignments (tasks) can be arranged for each year’s classes.

Sharing passwords
If usernames and passwords are the same as USos, pupils and staff already have them, which simplifies sharing them with them during school closures.

Login from home

Consider creating links for login and other help on school website.

For pupils and parents- Student login support https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5UQ2V3nRp4

Google classroom for teachers – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCNImsWUxZA
start from min 3:20 as your school tech team should have created all classrooms and allocated passwords (user and passwords can be aligned with USOs

KS2

– Decide in advance how many ‘Topics’ (or key areas which can be created within each class) and which ones you’d need.  Creating ‘Topics’, will help teachers organise work by topic, (i.e. Reading, Writing, Maths, etc) as posts otherwise appear by date order only.

– Consider disabling comments by pupils or providing clear guidance about the sort of comments which should be allowed or useful. (private comments with the class teacher are still possible, even if you disable pupil comments).

-Pupils submitting assignments (attaching google documents) – Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdDJSWQAM8A

If work needs to be amended after they have clicked ‘turn in’ (submitted), pupils need to ‘unsubmit’ it.

-Feedback can be done by class teacher via comments after teachers mark and ‘return’ the work.

-Scores or grades for assignments can be set up..

EYFS and KS1

Unless pupils have had a chance to work with google classroom, it may be more realistic to use teacher’s posts to guide parents and get pupils to record their work on paper or provide good online links to online resources that support parents further.
